Last week the boys were at camp and Nadia (Little Miss Sunshine) and I had the chance to craft our hearts out. After we studied every square inch of Hobby Lobby‘s crafts, we came home with a few goodies.
The funnest of all…Tie Dye!
The first step is to fill the bottles in your kit to the marked line. Shake until well dissolved.
Get your t-shirt a little damp and lay it out flat. Prepare your plastic bag by cutting it open. Decide what pattern you would like to create. For a swirl pattern, pinch where the burst of color will begin and simply twist.
Continue to twist until the entire shirt is swirled around the initial pinch point.
The end result will be a swirl of fabric with one definitive center. It will look much like a cinnamon roll. Mmmm…cinnamon roll.
The other t-shirt was to have two swirls. Pinch your first spot and twist about half the shirt. Pinch the next spot and continue to twist. Do not let your first twist unravel.
Once your swirls are completed, take three rubber bands and make six sections around your t-shirt. Try to keep the swirls tightly wound.
Place your t-shirt rubber band rolls onto the plastic bag. Take your swirl center color and begin to fill in the crevices. Don’t put too much in the scrunched up areas otherwise you loose some of the pattern. Mostly concentrate on getting the top of the folds.
Be sure to flip your roll over and repeat the above steps.
Once both sides are done, roll and cover in plastic for 6-8 hours. We went with 7!
Once the time is up, take your shirts to the laundry room. They will need to get washed right away. Also, when you remove the rubber bands, be careful! The dye will splatter!!!
The kit makes enough for 9 shirts. I would suggest starting this project in the morning…by evening you will have a fun shirt. Once I use up all of the dye, I will just purchase the pouches of dye from the grocery store and use about 1tsp. per 6-8 oz. of water. I can’t wait to try my hand at another design!
